PLANS

“Thank the good Lord you made it,” Andrew said when John and Isaac walked into the Old Mill. “We thought they’d got yea.”

“They almost did,” John said. “If it wasn’t—”

“You won’t believe what we found!” Isaac shouted over John’s voice.

Everyone looked quizzically at Isaac.

“The guards were right on us, and we thought that was it. We hid in a bush near the old Roman wall. I still can’t believe it. We found a secret passage through the wall! We never have to use the city gates again. That’s how we escaped.”

“You found a way through the wall?” Abraham exclaimed. “I’ve heard stories of secret passages through the wall all my life, but I’ve never found one.”

“We have now,” Isaac said. He was bouncing from foot to foot, so John nudged him.

“Calm down, Isaac,” John said. “We were lucky because the guards were closing in. The one that shouted for me to stop knows me. He’s worked for my father for as long as I can remember. Now that he’s seen me, my father will double and triple the guards on the city gates and bridges. It’s a good thing we found the secret passage when we did.”

“Where is it?” David asked.

“It goes through the wall and under the covered bridge at Black Friars,” Isaac said. He was still bouncing around the room.

“This might give us an advantage,” John said, thinking out loud.

“What do you mean?” Helena asked. “How can being seen by someone who knows you be an advantage? Your father will flood the stretes with guards now that he knows for sure you’re here.”

“Not to mention Walden is still out there as well,” David added.

“Yes,” John said. “But they’ll all be looking for me in London. We’ll be far away in Warwickshire, which is the last place they’ll expect me to be.”

Andrew wagged his finger at John. “The boy’s got a good point. They’ll all be searching for him – and us – here. We’ll be safer up there than we are here.”

“And we can come and go in and out of the city without being seen. The gates and bridges always made me shiver.” Helena clapped her hands. “This crazy idea might just work.”

“Okay, here’s the plan,” Andrew said. “We’ll leave here before dawn and use the secret passage you just found to get into the city. Once we’re inside the wall, we’ll break up into smaller groups like we often do. I’ll go with Helena, Abraham will go with David, and you two stay together. We’ll meet outside the Almshouses near Cripplegate.”

“Can’t we just stay outside the walls and meet outside Cripplegate?” David asked. “That way we wouldn’t have to go through the city at all. It’d be safer.”

“Not unless you want to swim across the Fleet,” Andrew replied. “I know I don’t want to be anywhere near that nasty water. Who knows what terrible disease we’d die of if we swam through that.”

“I never thought of that,” David said. “I’d rather be caught by Walden.”

“What do we do when we get to Coventry?” Andrew turned his attentions to John.
